Narrative Paragraph

Definition:

narrative paragraph is a paragraph that contains with problematic events that lead to complication which in turns find the resolution. In addition, narrative paragraph is intended to entertain or to deal with actual or vicarious experience in different way.

Generic Structure:
Orientation: setting the scene, introducing/giving necessary background (who,where,when)
Complication: the problems arise until finding the climax
Resolution: the problem is resolved
Reorientation: closing the paragraph by giving personal comment

Example:

Once upon a time, there was a kingdom in Priangan Land who was lived by a happy family. They were a father in form of dog who named Tumang, a mother who was called Dayang Sumbi, and a child who was called Sangkuriang. (Orientation)

However, after hunting along day, Sangkuriang didn’t see any deer to be hunted and began desperate and worried. Then he thought to shot his own dog and took the dog’s liver to be carried home. When he gave it to his mother, she suddenly shock and angry to Sangkuriang because she knew that the liver was Tumang’s. So she hit Sangkuriang’s head, that made him got wounded and scar, and banished him. In several years later, Sangkuriang had traveled many places and finally he arrived at a village. He met a beautiful woman and felt in love with her. When they were discussing their wedding plans, the woman looked at the wound in Sangkuriang’s head. It matched to her son’s wound which had left several years ago. Soon she realized that she felt in love with her son.( Complication)

She couldn’t marry him but she didn’t want disappointing him. Later on, she found the way. She asked Sangkuriang to make a lake and a boat in one night for celebrating their wedding day. He received that asking and started to make a lake and boat. With a dawn just moment away, the lake and the boat were almost complete. Dayang Sumbi had to stop it. Then, with a wave of her supernatural shawl, she lit up the eastern horizon with flashes of light until made the cock crowed for a new day. (Climax)

Knowing that he failed to marry her, he was very angry and kicked the boat. (Resolution)

It felt over and became the mountain of Tangkuban Parahu (in Sundanese, TANGKUBAN means upturned or upside down, and PARAHU means boat). (Reorientation)
